Photographic Interests:
Before I began my passion project, I listed out what interested me about photography:
-
Geometrey and composition - structure
-
Shadows and constrasts - exentuated through B+W filter
-
Light and purple/pink based pastels - colour tone?? (I did not include this in my end product)
-
Capturing people in their natural state
-
Use of blank space - negative space
-
Capturing the urban environment - street life
After having listed all these interests, I found that I was passionate about street photography.
Street Photography:
But what is street photography? After doing a bit of research I found:
Street Photography uses the raw approach of straight photography from which it derives.
Street Photography is unstaged photography, a challenge of the photographer with himself, an attitude, a state of mind. It is a reflection of every day life through the eye of a photographer able to document the ordinary capturing the decisive moment, or what others don't see.
“If you can smell the street by looking at the photo, it's a street photograph”
- Bruce Gilden -
What to convey:
I then decided to list a couple of themes/things that I would try to convey:
-
Isolation
-
Balance and symmetry
-
Hustle and bustle of the city life
-
Serenity within the buildings/alleyways themsleves
-
Harmony within human motion and still objects
After this I was able to determine my statement of intent
Statement of Intent:
I am interested in photographys ability to capture the
beauty in the mundane of everyday city life.
